Riyria Author in Yankee Connecticut

I’ll be attending ConnectiCon this coming Friday, Saturday, & Sunday (July 12th-14th.).

For the first time convention hosts actually contacted and invited to come their event, and not just to come, but to be a guest of honor. Times have changed since I used to pay for the privilege of selling my book at a table that I hauled and decorated. I used to eat a big breakfast because I wouldn’t get a break from standing at the table until the dealer room closed around 6pm. Three days of this would result in maybe thirty books sold, sore feet, and a bad back. Not a lot of fun—actually none at all. It was work. I’m hoping this trip will be different. It ought to be. For one thing, I’m not bringing the table.

So if you live on the east coast and want an autograph, want to see how I look without a mustache, or would like to meet Brandon Sanderson, (who is also a guest of honor) we’ll both be there.

I’ll be attending these events and would love to see you:

Friday 1:30p - 2:30p:  Worldbuilding in Fantasy & Scifi 101 - Panel 7

Friday 3:00p - 4:00p - Michael J. Sullivan Autograph Session - Online Media Guest Hall

Friday 7:00p - 8:00p: Cross-genre Writing - Panel 8

Saturday 1:30p - 2:30p:  Michael J. Sullivan Q&A - Panel 9

Saturday 3:00p - 4:00p - Michael J. Sullivan Autograph Session - Online Media Guest Hall

Saturday 5:00p - 6:00p: Starting Out With a Bang - Panel 1

Sunday 12:00p - 1:00p: The 10 Most Important Things you Need to Know About Writing - Panel 8

Sunday 3:00p - 4:00p: The Changing Face of Publishing - Panel 8

  1. I have been a long time reader of Fantasy and Science Fiction ever since I picked up Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series back in the 6-7th grade. Since then I can't not read. A year ago my wife made the off-hand comment "You read so much, you should probably just write your own book.", and from that day on I couldn't get the idea out of my head. I soon had several characters flooding my everyday thoughts! I started writing random names and places down, building these characters up and creating a world they would live in; All inside my head. Continuing to read other books, because I can't not read, I caught myself taking mental notes on how authors described their characters and worlds. I din't think I would be able to do that. Then I found your Riyria Revelations. I read the first omnibus' summary and bought all three!! Once I started I couldn't put them down. They quickly became one of my favorite series. They have a place on my shelf next to Robert Jordan's Wheel of time, J.V. Jones' Sword of Shadows, and Brandon Sanderson's Stormlight Archives. Once I finished them I had to see if you had anymore books out and I stumbled across your site. I saw the Writing Advice posts. I have read and reread these posts, I love them. You have given me a way to put the charaters I've been living with into words, into their own story. When ever I get to a place I'm having troubles with, I just jump onto your site, reread a couple random posts, then I'm good to go again. I guess the reason I'm telling you this is because I wanted to say thank you. I know my characters may never get published, and that doesn't bother me, they're mostly still in my head anyways! But Thank you. I really wish I could make it to the ConnectiCon, but living in central Kansas makes that a little hard.

    Jaron

P.S. I can't wait for the Crown Tower to come out!!

  2. Wow, thanks Jaron,
I'm always amazed to discover stuff I do matters to people. I guess I'm generally cynical when it comes to myself. I assume no one reads these posts, and if they do they roll their eyes at my foolishness. At the time I was writing the posts on Advice, I saw other posts talking about how such things were like diets and cookbooks--there was a glut of them. I wrote the things anyway because it gave me something to post on. Still I figured most folks saw them and rolled their eyes. "Another how-to-write post." Sigh.

So thanks for letting me know, and I'm glad you liked Riyria. Also be careful, I had characters that lived in my head for years; now look at me.

Thanks so much for signing then GIVING me a copy of "theft of swords"
It worked, and I am off to buy book 2 today.
It was a pleasure speaking with you and I am glad to have your story!
Wheel of time is over, now brandon may have competition for "whats the next big thing".
    Thanks again
